Haze: Saltborne features a expansive but easy-to-understand brewing system that allows characters to brew different types of spirits.
Like any alcoholic drink, it all starts with fermentation. Players can find and collect wild yeast on their travels which can be processed and turned into starter, that will slowly ferment over time.
The brewing process in haze can be summarized in 3 key steps.
Characters out adventuring may find wild yeast in their travels. The wild yeast can be harvested multiple times with a harvesting knife, yielding a wild yeast sample each time.
Wild yeast is no good for a proper bottle of spirits. Yeast samples found in the wild must be processed before they are usable. By combining the wild yeast with molasses, an alchemist can create yeast culture.
The yeast culture is a usable form of the yeast which a skilled cook can combine with a plethora of different ingredients to create many varities of starters, depending on the secondary ingredient:
After you make your starter, your brews need time to, well, brew! The fermentation time for each brew will depend on the type of starter. Typically the aging time will range from 5—12 days of total logged-in time.
You can carry the starter around with you to let it ferment, but this is a very slow process. By leaving it in a cask, you can make sure the starter has time to ferment even when your character is offline. Casks can be crafted by a woodworker by combining 2 lead bands with 6 lumber.
Once your starter is ready, its time to bottle it up. A finished starter can produce up to ten bottles worth of spirits. By using empty bottles on the finished starter, you can bottle it up and produce your finished drinks.
Your brew is now ready, bottled and ready for consumption. Enjoy responsibly!
The various types of alcohol available in Haze have certains perks assosciated with them when consumed, in addition to the usual 1 INT penalty and increased fatigue. Brews can provide all manner of perks, ranging from skill bonuses, to increased saves, or even temporary hit points.
For the most amibitious of brewers, Haze offers the chance to create and customise your very own brews. Like with all types of recipes, you can create custom starter recipes, so you too can have your own very own bespoke tomato-infused vodka.
You can name and choose a custom description for your new brew. Most importantly, the ingredients you choose to create your brew from will impact the recipe. The more and varied the ingredients used, the longer the fermentation process will take, and the more impactful and longer-lasting its maluses and bonuses will be.
Once your recipe is added, only your character will have access to the recipe. The recipe can be passed down either by copying it, or by other characters reverse-engineering your finished products.
Custom brew recipes are not discoverable through the Eureka system, or through random loot.
