This spell forges a supernatural bond, binding a creature’s soul to your own and compelling it into service as a familiar. Alternatively, it may restore a previously bound familiar.
You bind a willing creature of the appropriate type as your familiar. This use costs 50 XP per caster level. Your caster level will directly limit what creatures you are capable of binding to your service.
If your familiar has been lost or destroyed, you may cast this spell upon yourself to restore it. This use costs 25 XP per caster level and returns the most recently bound familiar.
An intelligent creature (INT 5 or higher) is never considered willing unless it has explicitly and verbally agreed, as roleplayed and approved by a DM. Attempting to bind such a creature without consent is treated as forced soul-binding and the creature gets a will save to prevent the binding, and the creature will react with hostility at a failed binding.
If the target is invalid or unwilling, the spell fails and no XP is expended.
Warning Binding a new familiar will replace your existing familiar, if you have one.
Valid Familiars You can examine creatures to see if they can be bound as familiar, as well as see what benefits they will grant you, if any.
XP Cost You can avoid the XP cost associated with this spell by casting it using an item, such as a scroll, or magic item that has bind familiar as the spell on the magic item.
