"Knowledge is not given — it is earned. A scholar bent over candlelit notes, a traveller patiently coaxing a foreign tongue from a willing tutor, an artificer puzzling out the shape of a thing not yet made. To research is to spend the rarest coin of all: time."
The Research System lets your character spend time — represented by your daily CXP (Crafting Experience) allowance — to slowly work toward goals that are banked on your character sheet. You chip away a little each day, and once a goal accrues enough invested CXP it completes.
Three kinds of research are currently supported: Languages, Crafting Recipes, and Spells.
Open the interface at any time with the toolbar at the top of your screen.
Research is paid for out of your daily CXP allowance — the same rolling pool you spend for crafting or building. Spending it on research uses up that "time," so completing anything meaningful takes several days of steady effort. CXP spent on research is not added to any craft; it is simply the time you devoted.
Each research goal has a CXP cost. When you select an entry, the right-hand panel shows its cost, your progress, and an Apply per session dropdown. Progress is saved on your character, so you can come back day after day until the goal is complete.

The window is split into three tabs across the top — Languages, Recipes, and Spells — and three columns:

To learn a language through research you must study alongside a trainer — another player character who already knows that language.
The base CXP cost depends on the language's category, and is then modified by your Charisma:
| Category | Base CXP |
|---|---|
| Regional | 300 |
| Racial | 600 |
| Special | 1200 |
| Charisma | CXP Modifier |
|---|---|
| 13+ | ½ cost (half) |
| 10 – 12 | normal cost |
| 9 or less | ×2 cost (double) |
In addition to CXP, finalizing a language costs Eminence Points (EP): a flat 20 EP plus the language's own EP cost. The EP is not charged until you finalize — it is taken immediately at that moment, so you must have the EP on hand. The full CXP and EP cost are shown on the detail panel before you invest anything.
Learning a language is more than memorizing words and grammar. It is a social process of observation, imitation, correction, and cultural understanding. Characters with a natural gift for communication find it easier to build rapport with their instructors, understand subtle meanings, and ask the right questions when confusion arises.
A highly charismatic student often forms a stronger connection with their trainer, allowing lessons to flow naturally and misunderstandings to be resolved quickly. By contrast, a student who struggles socially may find themselves talking past their teacher, missing important nuances, or requiring repeated explanations before concepts finally click into place.
The Charisma modifier represents this difference in interpersonal aptitude. It does not measure intelligence or diligence, but rather a character's ability to connect with others and learn through direct instruction.
You must remain with your trainer. Studying and finalizing both require the trainer to be nearby and in your area. Move too far apart and the lesson cannot continue.
A note on privacy: the Languages list shows every language your character does not yet know — it does not reveal what any trainer knows. If you attempt to study a language a chosen trainer cannot actually teach, you will simply be told they can't, and the attempt is logged. Do not use the system to fish for what languages another character knows; doing so is treated as exploiting.

On the Recipes tab you can research crafting recipes you do not yet know, for crafts you have trained.
Only Tier 1 and Tier 2 recipes can be researched. Tier 0 recipes are innate and need no research, and Tier 3 recipes cannot be researched at all.
A recipe's CXP cost is:
12 + (Recipe ECL × Recipe Tier) + the recipe's own crafting CXP cost
Invest CXP as with any other research. When the goal completes, the recipe is automatically added to the relevant Blueprints Notebook, ready to craft.

Wizards can research spells they are able to cast and turn them into spell scrolls.
The CXP cost is 200 CXP × the spell's circle (so a 2nd-circle spell costs 400 CXP).
Spell research happens in two phases:
The scribing supplies are the same ones used by the normal spell scribing process. Researching the spell pays the CXP; only the writing supplies are consumed at the scribing step (no additional CXP or EP). The freshly scribed scroll is unidentified until you identify it.
| Tab | Who | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Languages | Anyone (needs a trainer) | 300 / 600 / 1200 CXP by category, modified by Charisma, + 20 EP and the language's EP cost on finalize |
List shows all unknown languages; trainer must know it |
| Recipes | Anyone with ≥5 craft level | 12 + (ECL × Tier) + recipe CXP |
Tiers 1–2 only, at or below your craft ECL - 4 |
| Spells | Wizard 3+ | 200 × circle CXP |
Circles 1–3; then consumes Quill + Ink + Paper to scribe a scroll |
All research is paid from your daily CXP allowance and progresses a little at a time — plan to come back across several days.
